2018/1943 Hugo Award Nominations Opening Soon

Worldcon 76 San Jose advises us that they will open nominations for the 2018 Hugo Awards and 1943 Retrospective Hugo Awards within the next few days. They have been working with Worldcon 75 Helsinki and Worldcon 2018 Dublin to coordinate the combined membership information from all three Worldcons, and to do so within the limitations of the three countries’ data-protection laws. When testing of the online nomination form is complete, Worldcon 76 San Jose will release it on the Worldcon 76 web site and make an announcement. We’ll also announce the start of nominations here on The Hugo Awards web site. Paper ballots will also be distributed with Worldcon 76 Progress Report 2, which we understand is going to press in a few days and should mail to members of Worldcon 76 in February. Besides the online form, a PDF of the paper form will be available from Worldcon 76’s web site when it is ready for release.

Members of the 2017 (Helsinki), 2018 (San Jose) and 2019 (Dublin) Worldcons as of December 31, 2017 are eligible to make nominations for the 2018 Hugo Awards (for works first published or appearing in 2017) and 1943 Retrospective Hugo Awards (for works first published or appearing in 1942). If you are a member of more than one of those three conventions, you can still only cast one nominating ballot. Eligible members will be able to vote online at the Worldcon 76 web site or via paper ballot. The six highest-ranking nominees in each category will form the shortlist of finalists and will appear on the final ballot to be announced later this year. Only members of Worldcon 76 San Jose who join before the final ballot deadline (which is yet to be announced) will be eligible to vote on the final ballot.

Each Worldcon committee is a legally separate entity; therefore, the sharing of information between Worldcon committees is subject to any restrictions imposed by local law, which of course supersedes any requirements of the WSFS Constitution.

This is the final year that members of the subsequent year’s Worldcon are eligible to nominate on the current Hugo Awards. A change ratified in Helsinki and first effective with the 2019 Worldcon limits nominating to members of the current and previous Worldcon as of the end of the previous calendar year.

Membership Deadline for Nominating in 2018 Hugo Awards is December 31, 2017

If you want to nominate for the 2018 Hugo Awards, you must be at least a supporting member of one of these Worldcons by December 31, 2017:

  • Worldcon 75 Helsinki
  • Worldcon 76 San José
  • Dublin 2019: An Irish Worldcon

Persons who are supporting or attending members (or any other membership class that includes WSFS voting rights) of any of the 2016-2018 Worldcons as of December 31, 2017 will be eligible to nominate in the 2018 Hugo Awards. You do not need to be an attending member of any of these conventions to nominate, only a supporting member.

Nominating for the 2018 Hugo Awards will open in early 2018. The December 31, 2017 deadline is the deadline for joining one of the relevant Worldcons to be eligible to nominate. When nominations for the 2018 Hugo Awards open, we will post an announcement here. We also expect the relevant Worldcons to also make announcements at that time. If you are a member of the 2017, 2018, or 2019 Worldcons as of December 31, 2017, you are eligible to nominate for the 2018 Hugo Awards when nominations open in early 2018.

If you were not a member of Worldcon 75 and still want to nominate for the 2018 Hugo Awards, join Worldcon 76 San José or Dublin 2019: An Irish Worldcon by December 31, 2017 to be eligible to nominate. Note that joining Dublin makes you eligible to nominate for the 2018 Hugo Awards, but not to vote on the final ballot.

The December 31 deadline applies only to nominating. To vote on the final ballot, you must be a member of Worldcon 75 San José. The deadline for joining to be eligible to vote on the final ballot is the close of voting on the final ballot. (The final ballot deadline has not yet been announced.)

2018, 2019 Worldcons to Present Retrospective Hugo Awards

The 2018 and 2019 Worldcons will present Retrospective Hugo Awards for the years 1943 and 1944, the two conventions announced jointly at SMOFCon 35, the annual SF/F conrunners convention, in Boston on December 2, 2017.

Worldcon 76 in San José will present the 1943 Retrospective Hugo Awards for works first published/appearing in 1942. Dublin 2019: An Irish Worldcon will present the 1944 Retrospective Hugo Awards for works first published/appearing in 1943.

2017 Hugo Ceremony Coverage Plans

The 2017 Hugo Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, August 11, 2017 at 7:30 PM Eastern European Summer Time (UTC+3) in the Messukeskus (Convention Center) Hall 1 in Helsinki, Finland. The Hugo Awards web site will once again offer text-based coverage of the Hugo Awards ceremony via CoverItLive, suitable for people with bandwidth restrictions. For those with the bandwidth for it, Worldcon 75 Helsinki plans to offer live video streaming of the Hugo Awards ceremony via their YouTube channel. Details of the live-streaming coverage will be available at the 2017 Worldcon web site.

The Hugo Awards web site coverage team of Kevin Standlee, Cheryl Morgan, and Susan de Guardiola plan to be “on the air” approximately fifteen minutes before the ceremony. You can sign up at the CoverItLive event site for an e-mail notification before the event starts. Remember that the CoverItLive text coverage is text-only, and is likely to not be in synch with the video streaming. Also, the CoverItLive team here at TheHugoAwards.org is not responsible for the video streaming coverage and cannot answer any questions about it.

2017 Hugo Award Voting Closed

Voting for the 2017 Hugo Awards closed at 23:59 Pacific Daylight Time on July 15, 2017. The 2017 Hugo Award Administrators reported that 3,319 members of Worldcon 75 in Helsinki voted, which is the third-highest number of votes cast in the history of the Awards.

The results of the 2017 Hugo Awards will be presented at the Hugo Awards Ceremony at Worldcon 75 in Helsinki, on Friday, August 11, 2017. The Hugo Awards web site plans to provide live text-based coverage of the ceremony via CoverItLive as it has done for the past several years. Other coverage of the ceremony such as live-streaming of the audio/video of the event if Worldcon 75 provides it, will be announced here when details become available.

2017 Hugo Voter Packet Available

The 2017 Hugo Voter Packet, a selection of works shortlisted as finalists for the 2017 Hugo Awards and made available to all voting members of the 2017 Worldcon, is now available. Worldcon 75 announced in a Facebook post on May 17 that “Messages have gone out to voters, including personalized links and information on how to access the packet. Anyone who has not received it should contact hugohelp@worldcon.fi.”

The announcement also explains that the Hugo Voter Packet “includes many of the works on the final ballot in full, preview versions of others, and work by most of the individuals who are finalists.” Participation in the Hugo Voter Packet is voluntary, and is completely at the discretion of the various rights holders of the nominated works and of the individual finalists. The packet is organized and created by the individual Worldcon committees, and is not a required Worldcon function; however, many recent Worldcons have organized such packages for the benefit of their members to make it easier for them to evaluate the finalists.

The Hugo Voter Packet for 2017 is administered by the 2017 Worldcon, not the Hugo Awards web site. Direct any questions about the packet to hugohelp@worldcon.fi.

Additional 2017 Hugo Ballot Change Announced

Worldcon 75 announced in a Facebook post on May 17 that Mansik Yang, who had been previously announced as a finalist in the Best Fan Artist category, informed the Hugo administrators that he had published no non-commercial work in 2016 and therefore does not qualify for the category.

The announcement further states that Yang’s place on the ballot for Best Fan Artist will be taken by Elizabeth Leggett. Worldcon 75 will reissue paper Hugo ballots, and online Hugo ballot will be amended accordingly.

The revised final ballot for Best Fan Artist is:

2017 Hugo Ballot Change Announced

Worldcon 75 announced today that they have disqualified Alex Garner, who was initially announced as a finalist in the Best Fan Artist category for the 2017 Hugo Awards. According to the announcement, Garner notified the Hugo administrators that in fact the entirety of his published 2016 work was professional work and not fan art. The Hugo Administrators praised Garner for “his candour in dealing with this awkward situation” and “his integrity in bringing the matter to our attention.”

The announcement further states that Garner’s place on the ballot for Best Fan Artist will be taken by the next available candidate, Steve Stiles. Worldcon 75 will reissue paper Hugo ballots, and online Hugo ballot (which will go live shortly) will be amended accordingly.
